In vivo Performance of HRP-silk fibroin/ZnSr doped β-TCP Scaffolds for Osteochondral Tissue Regeneration

Abstract

Orthopedic surgeons are facing major limitations in the development of personalized therapies to regenerate the osteochondral (OC) defects.Hierarchically structured scaffolds consisting of cartilaginous and underlying osseous layers have appeared as advanced biomaterials to mimic the OC tissue [1].In this study, we investigated the in vivo performance of hierarchical enzymatically crosslinked silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels combined with ZnSr-doped β-tricalcium phosphate (ZnSrTCP) for OC tissue regeneration. The antibacterial properties of the hierarchical scaffolds were also assessed. Ionic-doped biomaterials can enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis, and improve their mechanical performance [2].
